Search engine optimisation or 'SEO' is the use of non-paid search engine results to increase quality and quantity of website traffic. This increases your brands exposure. If you know your audience's intent, by what words they're using and the type of content they're looking to consume, you can tailor your writing so search engine 'crawler's' can find and understand it.

What is this 'crawler' - a program used by search engines to collect data from the internet. When it finds a website, it sorts through its content and stores it in a database. It then analyses this data. When this data is indexed, the page become eligible to show up in search results. It is your goal to appear in search results as often as possible, therefore adapting your writing and content to appeal to crawlers improves your sites chance of visibility to larger audiences.

So why is this so important to us? This is because the majority of online traffic is driven by search engines. SEO drives far more traffic that PPC advertising when set up correctly. Therefore optimising your website allows your to deliver your information to wider audiences, for a far lower cost.

What are some best practices?

  • Creating unique, accurate title pages that describe your page's content, effectively communicates your message to consumers and allows your to. be found easier!

avoid - using title with no relation to the content, or using value titles

  • creating unique titles for each page allows google to differentiate from other pages on your site

avoid - using a single title for a large group of pages

  • use brief, yet descriptive titles. This seems confusing but titles too long can be deemed irrelevant, but those not informative enough will be optimised.

avoid - using lengthy titles that are unnecessary, and using unneeded words in your title tags.

How to optimise your content?

In order to optimise your content, it must be unique, compelling and useful. Research is so useful here, knowing what it is that your readers want and giving this to them. This in the mindset of your audience, words they use, queries they may have, and tailor your content specifically to them!

Another way to optimise content is writing in a way that is easy to read. Well written, yet not unnecessarily overcomplicated, is essential to ensure your readers continue to support your site. Easily avoidable mistakes such as grammatical and spelling errors can change your readers perception on the professional nature of your site.

Organising your content in a way that is easy to identify key areas of information, will appeal to your readers over vast information that is difficult to manage and take in. An easy way to do so is breaking your content into clear sections, so that your readers can identify where one topic ends and the other begins. Doing so allows them to find the key information they are seeking in your site, and encourages revisits!

Although SEO is so important for traction from the search engine, ensure that your content, at the end of the day, appeals to readers over SEO. Design your site so that it effectively engages both. Inserting unnecessary keywords that are great for search engines but are confusing to your readers is non beneficial. The point of SEO is to draw in users, but your content keeps them there, ensure it is useful and understandable to them.
